Two plastic boxes. The area of the bottom surface should be about 1,000 cm2 (30 cm × 30 cm). ASTM standard E104 suggests a maximum proportion of 25 cm3 volume / cm2 of surface area.

Towels are used to initially wipe water from surfaces.

Supersaturated NaCl salt solution is used to maintain a 75% relative humidity in one box.

Supersaturated MgNO3 salt solution is used to maintain a 53% relative humidity in the other box.

Container: This is used to hold water while the apparent mass is determined.

Two plastic grids: These are inserted into each box to hold the samples above the saturated salt solution.
